Cosmetic procedures are all the rage, and thousands of Australians are getting themselves nipped-and-tucked. From lip fillers, nose jobs, boob lifts, to tummy tucks, it’s not uncommon for people to be getting a little work done. Many are willing to go under the knife to achieve their desired looks when their diets and gym workouts are failing to succeed.
What most people don’t understand about the cosmetic surgery market, is that to perform cosmetic surgery, you do not have to be a qualified surgeon, you only need to be a qualified doctor with an AHPRA registration.
The difference between a doctor performing the surgery, and a specialist surgeon, is that the surgeon will have at least an additional 5 years’ worth of specialised training.
Can you imagine getting breast augmentation surgery performed by your ophthalmologist or psychiatrist?
And more importantly, what if something goes wrong? If the surgery is in their clinic, and something goes wrong, do you even have access to emergency treatment, or an anaesthetist? Suddenly paying a little more for a qualified specialist plastic surgeon doesn’t sound so bad.
Many travel to Thailand, Turkey, or Indonesia to get their procedures done at a significantly cheaper cost. However, the lower price comes at a higher risk to your health. These countries don’t hold higher regulations around cosmetic surgery.
In Australia, a specialist plastic surgeon is a plastic surgeon that is accredited by the Commonwealth Government, they are trained and qualified to perform invasive, reconstructive, and cosmetic surgeries in both private, and public hospitals. The title of specialist plastic surgeon can only be used by Fellows of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) approved specialist surgeons.
There changes afoot though, with both The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), and the Medical Board of Australia (MBA) agreeing to implement better safety measures, but falling short of ensuring that all doctors performing surgeries, are qualified surgeons.
At Cutting Edge Surgery in Toowoomba, our surgeons are both FRACS accredited, and members of the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons.
As a husband-and-wife team, you’ll often find both surgeons working together, giving the patient the benefit of an extra set of qualified eyes, all for the price of one. Dr Assad Bangash is a specialist plastic, aesthetic, and reconstructive surgeon, and Dr Nasrin Davarpanah is a general surgeon, with a special interest in breast surgery.
So, before you decide to have any cosmetic procedures, ensure that your surgeon has a fellowship from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and is a member of the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons.
You can contact Cutting Edge Surgery Toowoomba for all your cosmetic, aesthetic, reconstructive, or general surgery needs.
